visit: Cannot generate any Expression with VisIt 3.1.1?

I haven’t used Expressions for quite some time, but today I tried to use them and realized that I cannot get even the simplest one to work. Not sure what could be wrong.

The VisIt version is 3.1.1.

I start visit with: visit -debug 5

and load the noise.silo sample datafile.

In the Expressions window I create a new Scalar mesh variable, just a simple abs(airVf), but when I try to plot it (PseudoColor) I get a message like:

Any idea what could be going on? (I attach the A.engine_ser.5.vlog)
