docker-images: oracle/database:19.3.0-ee not connecting using sqlplus

When launching the oracle/database:19.3.0-ee image (freshly built) with the following:

docker run --name oracle -p 1521:1521 -p 5500:5500 \
  -e ORACLE_SID=orasid \
  -e ORACLE_PDB=db1 \
  -e ORACLE_PWD=P4ssw0rd \
  -e ORACLE_CHARACTERSET=AL32UTF8 \
  -v /media/src/opt/oracle:/opt/oracle/oradata \
  oracle/database:19.3.0-ee

I am not able to connect using sqlplus:

ken@ken-desktop:/opt/oracle/instantclient_19_3$ ./sqlplus system/P4ssw0rd@localhost:1521/orasid

Simply the command never finishes or “hangs up” so to speak. I am on Ubuntu 18.04, using a Ryzen processor (simply mentioning it in case it is relevant, as I’m thinking this is some kind of platform compatibility issue).

I formerly had no problems with 12.2 running in a Docker image with the same system. Would appreciate any feedback/help/insight! This is with a fresh database (no attempt has been made to run a setup script).

The output of the docker run command was:

You can work around the ORA-12637: Packet receive failed error by creating a sqlnet.ora file on the “client” side (e.g. SQL*Plus) containing DISABLE_OOB=ON. For quick tests on Linux, you can create ~/.sqlnet.ora.

There was a change in Oracle Net in 19c to automatically choose the out-of-band break setting, but it seems some network stacks are not processing packets correctly, so using the sqlnet.ora override can help. In one case looked at, the Docker engine seemed to be affected in userland-proxy mode. Docker 18.09.8 was ok but 18.09.9 hung at connect. Franck Pachot has a blog post about this at https://medium.com/@FranckPachot/19c-instant-client-and-docker-1566630ab20e.

A similar packet issue with VirtualBox networking was fixed in VirtualBox 6.0.14.
