vscode: "Open with Code - Insiders" is not available
Does this issue occur when all extensions are disabled?: Yes/No
- VS Code Version: 1.75.0-insider (user setup)
- OS Version: Windows 11 Pro 22H2 22621.1105
Steps to Reproduce:
- Install VSCode v1.75.0-insider
- During installation, select
Add "Open with Code - Insiders" action to Windows Explorer file context menucheckbox.
https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/127365 is closed but the issue is not - at least not for me. I’ve reinstalled VSCode 3 times already (the first time was a new install actually) and the option is not in the context menu - not in the Show more options menu either.

Windows 11 is released more than 2 years ago. Millions of programs successfully integrate with the new context menu and VSCode still fails. I’m not going to implement the workaround suggested in #183297 because 1) It’s a workaround 2) I should not be forced to tweak my machine for something as basic as integrating with context menu 3) #127365 is closed as fixed. It is not fixed.
I opened this issue for 1.75.0-insider. I’m now on 1.84.0-insider and still have it.
Unbelievable how this is still not resolved… Is it really that hard for an app from Microsoft itself to fix an issue for a feature where many other applications from other vendors can do it easily?
It’s really frustrating having to open VSCode first in order to then open any folder, instead of opening the folder directly in VSCode from the Explorer.
Bumping this issue because its embarrassing that Notepad++ works correctly but VS Code doesn’t
I saw it on insider some time ago but never on stable. It seems this feature has been abandoned.
Any updates? I would like to get more attention on this issue…
With a fresh install of 1.84.0-insider on a fresh install of Windows 11, this is still not fixed.
email with the logs sent, despite the error, I was able to follow all the steps you indicated @deepak1556
Haven’t received any logs so far, are users still experiencing issue with latest insiders where context menu does not show up after installation ? Please note, this issue is about the issue with insiders and not stable.
This is the email address of the developer of Notepad++: don.h@free.fr

On my machine, “Open with Code Insiders” actually works, but for the stable VS Code it still doesn’t. 😵💫 Installed versions are 1.84.0-insider (user setup) and 1.84.0 (user setup) on Windows 11 Pro 22H2.
Is way to add it to the main menu and not the “Show more options” menu? @ITSURENXD
Also, @retroNUC It seems like this is still only in Insiders and not in the Stable release.
When does this come into the stable release? Is there any registry hack to achieve the same, I have wasted about 3 hours trying to find a way but found no way which can bring it into the Primary menu. I even looked at registries of VSCode Insider, where I find an entry
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\VSCodeInsidersContextMenuwhich has the title of the right click option for Insiders but not any way to direct it to the stable VSCode. 😔
