core: Genie Aladdin integration broken
The problem
I have had a Genie Aladdin garage door opener (cover) in Home Assistant for a year or maybe longer. Starting October 25, the cover entity has been unavailable in Home Assistant. I believe this was probably the same time that I upgraded to 2021.10.6, but I could be wrong. I upgraded to 10.7 on the chance that it could fix the problem, but it did not.
I have tried restarts, I have removed the cover info from configuration.yaml, restarted, put the info back into configuration.yaml and restarted again. I have tried the username and password fields with and without quotation marks and also in secrets.yaml.
The garage door opener still works in the Genie Aladdin mobile app. I changed the password using the mobile app, updated the info in Home Assistant and restarted. No change.
I then deleted the entity using the Home Assistant UI and removed the cover info from configuration.yaml and restarted, added the info back in and restarted again and the cover entity does not repopulate.
Another user in the Home Assistant discord has described the same problem. When I look in the Home Assistant logs, I don’t even see any appearances of the words ‘genie’ or ‘aladdin’. The only instances of cover are lines related to an automation that uses the state of the garage door as a condition:
2021-11-01 18:07:06 WARNING (MainThread) [homeassistant.components.automation] Error evaluating condition in 'Family Door opens with garage closed, Garage Light 01 on': In 'condition': In 'not': In 'state': In 'state' condition: unknown entity cover.garage_door
What version of Home Assistant Core has the issue?
core-2021.10.6, core-2021.10.7
What was the last working version of Home Assistant Core?
core-2021.10.5
What type of installation are you running?
Home Assistant OS (a VM on an Intel box)
Integration causing the issue
Aladdin Connect

@pbelevich: I have it working in HA - so far so good. Unfortunately, I haven’t paid too much attention to this add-on, and just realized it needs more love than just fixing the back end… it needs an Integration update, as it sits, it still requires the .yaml config 😦
I don’t see an assignee for this issue or a code owner - wondering if our integration has been stranded? Anyone know who we should ping from the HA team?
You need to link your Aladdin Connect account in the SmartThings app. Then link SmartThings to HomeAssistant and you should see your garage door again.
Confirmed the update is working well for me! Thanks @pbelevich for updating that Python library.
I’m not sure if HA would have auto-updated or not, but I upgraded to
core-2022.2.1and after restarting, everything worked (although it did create a 2nd set of Devices, so I had to update all of my integrations and then delete the old devices).@mpv1953 Search
coverin your Devices and see if you had an extra set of doors created when it updated, like I did.I feel, here is the PR with the fix(I tested it with my own door and my own credentials and it works fine):
https://github.com/shoejosh/aladdin-connect/pull/6
I wanted to test it with HA(by replacing the python files with mine), but I don’t know how to enable the door in HA, because HA says that “This entity is currently unavailable and is an orphan to a removed, changed or dysfunctional integration or device.”
Ok thanks for the help I really appreciate it , I was able to find the new entity.

Go to Configuration Go to Devices & Services Go to Entities Search entities for “cover” You will probably see new covers that are part of the "aladdin_connect Integration — Reply to this email directly, view it on GitHub<#58946 (comment)https://github.com/home-assistant/core/issues/58946#issuecomment-1063337471>, or unsubscribehttps://github.com/notifications/unsubscribe-auth/AQWUOEXF5R5MQGCSYY2FVRTU7EDBPANCNFSM5HGTEAOA. I didn’t have to do any updates that were specific to aladdin, so I can’t help you with that. But from my understanding aladdin made changes on their side that requires us (end users) to reassociate new covers for it to work in HA.

The update worked for me. The objects on my dashboard showed up as orphaned, then I removed them and added the new door objects by searching my devices for cover.xxx
@pbelevich : Great work! I tested the library, looks to be working for my door as well. Later today I’ll give it a try on HA - really don’t see why it wouldn’t work though.
Now the problem will be making things configurable for both systems until they get everyone moved over… Maybe HA guys make a configuration switch in HA? I guess that wouldn’t work to well with a library, unless we add a configuration switch for picking the site…
I received a response from Genie:
