accompanist: [Navigation Material] ModalBottomSheet crashes when you change NightMode

When your app is showing a BottomSheet and you try to change NightMode from the Device UI Settings (or using AppCompatDelegate.setDefaultNightMode()), app crashes.

Open the app and show the BottomSheet.
While the BottomSheet is shown, after 3 seconds, the crash happens automatically. Or if you want, from the Device Settings, change the NightMode theme.

Hey @jossiwolf thank you for the fix - is there any chance this could get backported to 1.4.* stable release?

EDIT: Switching to Material 1.5.0-alpha02 is quite problematic for us as then it will force use to move to accompanist-0.31.0-alpha which in turn forces Compose 1.5 upon us, while we have just migrated from 1.3 to 1.4

This also happens when the bottom sheet was open when the user put the app in the background and process death happens. Upon returning to the app, the restored state would make the bottom sheet open again, but it crashes with the mentioned exception.

This crash is also reproducible if orientation/display mode changes while bottom sheet is open.

This is still happening with the 1.4.0-beta02. Can this please be prioritized? It is a crash and it still happening after 3 releases.

@jossiwolf +1 on this. And 1.5 is still in beta today. I understand that the fix was on material compose library. But is there anything we can do to address this as a hot fix 30.1.2? This is a pretty impactful issue that you can’t have config changes on bottom sheets.

It is still happening with following code. (Using androidx.compose:compose-bom:2023.10.01 in Android Studio Iguana | 2023.2.1 Canary 9)

}

Here, the use of an arbitrary height is causing the crash. First screen rotation is fine, rotating back to initial orientation will produce a crash.

The upstream issue has been fixed in Compose Material 1.5.0-alpha01. You should be able to benefit from this fix by updating your Compose Material dependency or including one.
