desktop: macOS - Github Desktop opens to a white screen and is unresponsive (AirPlay display and DisplayLink)

Description

Opening the app, the app window is completely unresponsive, though I can get to the menu just fine. It is similar to this issue over on windows 10, but this I am on macOS:

https://github.com/desktop/desktop/issues/4054

I have tried clearing the Library data, but may not have found all the spots needed… This will explain why there is no signin or repository data shown in the console screen grab.

Version

  • GitHub Desktop: 1.3.2
  • Operating system: macOS High Sierra 10.13.5

Steps to Reproduce

  1. click Github Desktop icon
  2. App loads but only shows white screen.

Expected Behavior

App to open normally

Actual Behavior

Just an unresponsive white screen

@PeterBowater thanks for the extra context, and I’m glad you were able to workaround it!

I’m going to close this out because I’m not sure what else Desktop can do currently to avoid that, but this is great to refer back to if someone else stumbles upon it in the future.

@seangabel I would recommend reaching out to the vendor for hardware support

Glad I could help @watr !

Thanks @shiftkey , that didn’t appear to change anything, but I did get this warning when starting the app from the terminal:

Not sure it is relevant…

BUT! Your comment about hardware acceleration got me thinking… I use a DisplayLink adapter on my 2012 Mac Air to allow me to run two external monitors, they recently came a cropper after the update to High Sierra: https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/1854724

SO… I actually have one monitor plugged into the DisplayLink device, and one via the regular display port. I’d come back from holiday and plugged the laptop back in and the problem manifested itself on next launch of Github Desktop.

With the situation with DisplayLink and having to use AirPlay to get it to work properly, I disconnected everything external and tried running up Github Desktop and it appeared fine…!

Plugged the external monitor in via the display port and then the DisplayLink adapter and it appears perfectly on all screens… what a weird thing to happen! I suppose the hardware acceleration must have crashed or similar…? I noticed not other detriment to speed or appearance.

So, all happy and glad to be able to stop you scratching your head, I come back on here to leave a comment… I then think ‘Hmmm, what if I close it and open it with the externals connected now?’ Close it,open it, and the issue re-occurs. So definitely repeatable. In the mean time I will have to disconnect things start GitHub Desktop and then reconnect things (it will be left open for a long time…).

Thanks again for your help and time,

Peter.
